SUMMARY AND OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE The senior design project course is the capstone design course for Mechanical Engineering. It is a year-long project that involves conception, design, and execution of a design task. There are 3 laboratory classes devoted entirely to senior design: MAE 189A (fall); MAE 189B (winter); and MAE 189C (spring). If you have a specialization in Mechanical Engineering, your senior project must reflect that specialization. This is important for fulfilling graduation requirements.
Your Senior Design Project is the culmination of all you have learned at UCI. The Project can be defined in many ways; it can encompass hardware and/or software, but the Project MUST include your creative input (i.e., design).
The key resources for this course are: (1) this web page and (2) your Project Advisor.
STARTING OUT -- all of the starting out tasks below should be completed within 4 weeks of the start of the Fall Quarter; if you are having trouble joining or initiating a project, get help early!
Find a project, a project team, and an advisor Sign up for the course using the course code for the section of your Project Advisor Submit a project proposal Obtain approval (perhaps after modifying the proposal) Develop a Project Timeline (Gantt Chart)
APPROXIMATE SCHEDULE FOR MAE 189 Since each project is different and under the direction of a different advisor, it is difficult to have a precise schedule. A general outline of where each project should be at the various weekly points is given, however.
REITERATION OF COURSE MILESTONES There are 4 items of documentation that help demonstrate a successful MAE 189 Senior Design Project:
project binder that shows a plan and steady progress toward the project goal A preliminary design review presentation (including a recommended design to pursue) A final design presentation The object of the design available for Display Day presentation
GRADING Your grade is given by your Project Advisor. Your grade is given individually and is based on the 4 items listed above along with your Advisor's evaluation of your contribution to the group effort.
