Overview

Description:

Design Studies provides the opportunity for artistically and technologically oriented graduate students to include a set of courses from Arts, Social Sciences, ICS and Engineering into their program of study. The courses combine artistic sensibilities and technological capabilities with an active and creative effort.
The goal is to provide an opportunity to explore fundamental issues involved in the development and application of technology to human needs ranging from engineering design and information processing to education and entertainment.

Need:

Design Studies is an enrichment of existing graduate programs that allow students to take courses drawn from different majors around campus that impact Design. These course share a combination of technology and artistic insight that is driven by the intersection of computer-based visualization and physical construction or movement.
Early examples are the combination of virtual reality and architecture. However, it extends now to many areas including combined animation and live-performance, robotic art, and articulated buildings. On the horizon, it will include tactile interface technology, are virtual sculpture and other physical activities such as robotic surgery.

Format:

Design Studies is offered as a set of elective courses to the graduate major in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Graduate students interested in this program may choose three graduate courses from the following list:
    • ICS 227 Software Architecture
    • CS 287 Computer Graphics
    • Psych 240 Virtual Reality
    • Dance 281AB Dance and Digital Technology
    • MAE 242 Robotics
    • MAE 249/ECE249 Micro-Sensors and Actuators
    • CEE 250 Finite Element Method
    • ECE 207 Modeling and Rendering for Image Synthesis
Each of these courses exist in the various graduate majors at UCI. This Design Studies program provides the opportunity for students to coordinate their interest with others on campus.
