The laboratory occupies about 3200 square feet of high bay laboratory space in the
Engineering Laboratory Facility at the University of California, Irvine. The laboratory
is equipped with four wind tunnels of various sizes and capabilities, a water flow facility,
two axisymmetric jets, a channel flow, associated turbulence producing apparati, and
various other flow devices and loops. Many of the flow devices are supplied by conpressed
air which is available at 3000 scfm at 150 psig and 500 scfm at 500 psig. The largest flow devices in the facility are the four wind tunnels. The tunnels vary from a test selection with a cross cestion of 60 by 90 cm and a length of 8 m to one with a cross section of 25 by 25 cm with a length of 1 m. The smallest tunnel is equipped with a three component force balance and is used primarily for aerodynamic and calibration studies while the larger tunnels are used for more general fundamental and applied flow and convective heat transfer studies. The tunnels are capable of speeds from 2 to 50 m/s or about 100 miles per hour. The laboratory is equipped with four channels of constant temperature anemometers and high frequency temperature measuring systems. These high frequency signals are digitized using one of the PC based analog to digital converter systems. In order to measure flow characteristics in complex or two phase flows, the laboratory is equipped with three laser anememeters and associated signal processing equipment. In addition, the laboratory has several precision pressure and temperature measuring systems. Most data are analyzed digitally using one of the 486 or Pentium PCs in the laboratory. For image processing, a Silicon Indigo computer and associated software is available. While much of the data is analyzed using commercial software, some software is written in house to accommodate the special requirements of the various sensors that are used in the laboratory.
